Will You Light A Candle?

Today, I took part in a region-wide public speaking contest. I spoke about global poverty and "lighting a candle" in the darkness of poverty. :) Here's my speech:

Light a Candle

We live in a crazy fast-paced world, where it’s hard enough to remember the next thing on our to-do list, let alone what’s happening to someone else halfway around the globe. We turn on the tap and instantly there is water, but what about those who spend two hours of their day to fetch water? We complain about going to school, but what about those who can’t go to school? We complain about going to work, but what about those who don’t have a job? We spend $1 on a bag of chips, but what about those who only earn one dollar a day? One dollar a day!

These are realities for over 3 billion people in our world today. If your family income is $25,000 a year, you are richer than 81% of the people in our world. To us, food is a given. So is running water. So are healthcare and education. Our lifestyle is not normal. Furthermore, we are always trying to “keep up with the Joneses.” But have you ever considered that maybe, just maybe, YOU are the Joneses?

If we are the Joneses, then we should open our eyes to the many who are less fortunate than ourselves. Through modern technology, we can easily witness all the pain and suffering happening halfway around the world. We see images and read about starving children and families living in mud shacks. Most of us choose to change the channel, click away from the website, or flip the page. We have become by-standers, doing nothing. As we elementary students learn in school, to witness pain and do nothing is the same as causing the pain ourself.

Turning a blind eye will never make this world a better place. Leaving it to “someone else” will never make the world a better place. One of my favourite analogies is: It is better to light one candle in the darkness than not light one at all. Even if it only makes a small difference, the one light leads the way and people will join in by lighting their candles, eventually eliminating the darkness.

There is a well-known quote that says: It is more blessed to give than receive. I know this to be true from personal experience as my family has had many opportunities to be involved in initiatives to help fight global poverty.

You know the commercials: one dollar a day and a child’s life is changed forever. They’ll have nutritious meals, education and healthcare. Well, I can tell you, it’s true! My family sponsors two children, Florianlyn from the Philippines and Bell Bradley from Haiti. It is an amazing experience writing to them and hearing back from them, learning about their growth, culture and everyday life. Think about it: one dollar a day changes these kids’ lives. That’s less than your morning coffee.

How about this one: $10 can save a child from dying. Here’s how: $10 buys a mosquito net which protects children while they sleep from mosquito bites that infect them with malaria. Ten dollars can save a life! That’s less than what we would pay to go watch the latest movie. These are just two examples of the many ways your money can help to fight poverty.

But it’s not just money that can make a difference. Your time can too. Do you have extra pillowcases? Did you know that you can sew them into dresses for African girls living in poverty? Another example is one that I am passionate about. It is packing Christmas shoeboxes full of toys, school supplies and hygiene items for children living in 3rd world countries. It is an awesome way to bring happiness to an otherwise grim holiday for these kids. Watching videos of the joy on their faces as they open the shoeboxes always makes me smile. As you can see, volunteering your time is just as valuable as giving your money.

Aside from giving money and time, there is one thing that all of us can do: lending our voices to those living in poverty. Speaking out for those who have no voice. It could be a Facebook status or a tweet on Twitter, a blog post or a conversation with friends. You would be surprised at how many people don’t know, but would like to learn about global poverty.

You may think that all these things I’ve mentioned are too small to ever make a big enough difference. But just like the analogy of the candles, when everyone does a small part, there is hope that global poverty can be eliminated. It’s a big dream that needs all the help it can get, and it needs people like you and me to respond and say that we will make a difference, no matter how small. Now that you have heard, what will you do?

Will you light your candle?

I came third place. :) With the prize money, I'm gonna buy bed nets for kids in Africa. I react pretty badly to mosquito bites, and I can't even imagine what it'd be like to get a disease from a mosquito bite. :/ Wanna donate to fight malaria too? You can, by clicking on this link, and watching the video below:

(Please pause the playlist on the sidebar!)

As you can see from the vid, donating is as easy as a text message! Please seriously consider donating to this cause. It saves lives. :) Thanks for reading!! :)

No-name, at the Moment...

This post, or rather "series" has no name yet, so I need your help to help my name it. Ever so often (once a week? once every two weeks? :P) I'll be writing a post about a random piece of media (book, movie, song, TV show, maybe even iPod apps, whatever. You get the picture. :P). Yeah, so it doesn't have a name yet. "Media"? (Can you say booorring!?) LOL, so as you can see, my creative vibes aren't going right now, so help me name this series! ;)

Today, I'm gonna talk about a little-know artist named Sarah Walker. She has one album out right now, entitled "Overflow." Let me tell you: Ah-maze-ing!!! :) She's a Christian artist. A portion of all the profits from her sales go to fight poverty in Africa. How sweet is that?! :) Anyways, back to the actual music. Her songs are absolutely moving, encouraging and make you want to worship God even more!

Here's a sample of my fave lyrics by her:
i want to live out of the overflow/cuz deep in my heart i know/Your love is all i need/and i want to shine with radiance deep inside/reflecting compassion and Your grace for all to see/His love in me.

Love it!! :D Check out more of her stuff here.

Thanks for reading, and don't forget: this post needs a name! :P

March Break Movie: Mars Needs Moms

Okay, so for real, my cousin, brother and I were the only ones in the theatre between the ages 10 and 25. Everyone else was either a child younger than 10 or a mom over 25. Haha. But it was a good movie! I walked in thinking I might not like it, but I'm one for trying new things, so I went ahead and watched this 3D cartoon sci-fi movie. Not bad, I must say. :)

There is life on mars! They live underground, which is why humans can't find these martians. Every 25 years or so, baby martians pop out of the ground and the martians have a problem: they SUCK at being moms. So, they created nanny-bots. And in order for these nanny-bots to be programmed, the martians look for a mom on earth, kidnap her, then take all her brain memory and plug it into the nanny-bots. Mars needs moms! And since Milo's mom happens to be a very good mom, and Milo happens to be a very good son and listens to her, mars wants her. "My life would be so much better if I didn't have a mom!" Milo shouts at her in anger. And little does he know, he's about to find out what that's like. When Milo's mom gets taken, Milo decides he's going to apologize for what he said, goes to her room... and she's gone. He is able to hitch a ride on the spaceship, and get to mars to find out what's going on. Will he be able to save his mom and show the martians they don't really need these nanny-bots, just "the crazy love thing?"

So, the obvious message here is: don't listen to your mom, or mars will take her. No, just kidding. ;) This movie has many valuable messages, for kids, parents and teens. Family is important. Your mom loves you, and that's why you're always told to eat you broccoli or else no TV. Teamwork. Love. Selflessness. All important lessons you get from this movie.

This movie is a great one, go watch it! :)

My March Break Read...

Okay, fine. So it can't really be a March Break read if I read it on the weekend before March Break in a matter of 24 hours. It didn't take me 24 hours to read the book, but i gotta sleep and grocery shop. So it took me about 3.5 hours...

"Save the Date" by Jenny B. Jones is... Legit. That's not a very English-class approved word, but ask my friends and brother: "legit" is the biggest complement I can give something. So, this book is legit.

You'll get everything from this book: romance, humour, faith, tug-at-your-heartstrings, and even a little mysterious edge. Jenny B. Jones is really good at mixing genres. (Side note: also check out her "Charmed Life" series, even MORE mixing of genres, it's amazing.)

You'll start grinning even before you dig into Jenny's sense of humour, just by reading the plot line. The plot of this story is so bizarre and funny, I loved it:

Lucy Wiltshire runs a non-profit organization called Saving Grace. Saving Grace is transitional housing for girls who've aged out of the foster care system, and are now homeless. This is what Lucy was put on this earth to do. So, imagine her problems when a major donor backs out, and she's about to lose everything. Enter Alex Sinclair, retired early from the NFL and now running for Congress. But he's got a problem too: he doesn't have half the votes he needs.

Alex has the money Lucy needs, and Lucy - well, a relationship with Lucy - surprisingly seems to have the votes Alex needs. So despite their mutual dislike, Alex makes Lucy an "offer." Pose as her fiancee and he'll save Saving Grace.

Lucy's desperation gets the best of her: she accepts. She doesn't know a touchdown from a field goal, or the governor's wife from his mom. But she and Alex has a game-plan, and it's going to work. Alex will win the election and Lucy will have Saving Grace. But when God asks them to put down the playbook and follow His book, will they?

You'll laugh, you'll cry - you'll have the time of your life with Lucy, Alex and their surrounding cast... So go get your hands on a copy of "Save the Date"!!!

Japan & Hockey Hits

I guess some blog posts aren't happy ones. This one definitely is not.

Devastation in Japan this morning and a 8.8 magnitude earthquake hits, then hours later a terrifying tsunami. Video footage is absolutely unbelievable:

(I had to remove the vid, 'cause it wasn't behaving... ;) But I'm sure you've seen it on the news. If not, please look for a video on YouTube or Yahoo! because you need to see the desperation and devastation in this country to fully understand.)

As you can see, Japan needs our prayers, so please pray for Japan!!!

On a totally different note that seems totally irrelevant in the shadow of Japan, but is still an issue is the crazy hit that occurred in the NHL this week:

This is a long video, but just watching the first few seconds, you get the point. Makes you cringe. I personally think the the NHL needs to do something about this, 'cause this is insane!

Anyways, thanks for reading and please remember to keep Japan in your prayers!

This and That and Everything Else...

Hey!!! It's been far to long... Anyways, this is way exciting: my school's boy's basketball team won the regional championship!!! My schools never won a regional championship before! Super exciting! :) Here's a pic that I'm pretty proud of, considering it was taken with an iPod...
That was a three, by the way. ;)

I took a few more, that were also pretty cool. This is the clearest one though...

I'm gonna be at a public speaking contest on Sunday, pretty stoked for that. :) My topic's global poverty. Prayer for me would be awesome, that people who need to hear my message will hear... :)

Lastly, I've failed at NOT getting sick, and I have a cold. I'm glad it's the weekend! LOL.

Hope you have a awesome weekend!
